whitney

One of my earliest happy memories involves Whitney Houston.  When I was little, after dinner each night I would put on a "concert" for parents, belting out "Saving All My Love For You" into a hairbrush, running around the living room (there's many a video of this floating around somewhere!).  I'm so, so sad to hear about her passing away.  Like, maybe even shed a tear or two.  Just the other day I was listening to her in the car, wondering and hoping, we would hear from her again.  I guess this is what happens when you marry the wrong man...I'm looking at you Bobby.

All Whitney all day today.

The Story of Us

In the spirit of Valentine's Day next week (and partly because the things swirling about in my head are too random for a blog post), I thought it would be fun to join the link up From Mrs. to Mama is hosting. Here's a fun love survey sharing the story of us...

1. How long have you and your significant other been together?

Four years this May.  Nearly two of those four years we've been married.  Sometimes I can't believe it's only been four years and other times it feels like our first date was yesterday.  Either way, I have a hard time remembering what my life was like before Tom.  When I look back, it seems like he's been there all along, and I love that.  Here are some pictures of our first six months or so...
Gah...we look so young!
2. How did you meet? {What's your "love" story?}

Tom and I met in/around 2002 when I was a junior in college.  He dated one of my roommates and after they broke up, they remained friends and over the next few years, he became a casual acquaintance.  He was always around and our mutual friend (who I lived with even after college) always spoke about him, but I didn't spend much time around him since I had a boyfriend.  Tom claims he's liked me since we first met and set out to date me...good thing he is a patient guy :)

Fast forward to 2008 on the day of my graduation from graduate school.  My family hosted a party for me at a local bar and after we wore out our welcome, one of my friends (the one mentioned in #1) suggested we head downtown to a happy hour that Tom was hosting.  I went, we clicked, we flirted...and the rest, as they say, was history.  He invited me and one of my girlfriends to lunch the next day with him and his friend, and then he called that night to ask me out to dinner.  My last first date.

Here is a picture from that night...see the arm behind my head giving me bunny ears?  Yep, that's Tom.  Told you we were flirting.

3. If married, how long have you been married?

Yes!  Our two year anniversary is coming up on May 29th.  Really can't believe how quickly nearly two years has gone by.  We've been busy bees.

4. If you are married, where did you get married at? Big or small wedding?

We had a small to medium size wedding...I think we ended up with about 95 guests.  We were married lakeside, on a golf course about 35 miles north of Cincinnati.  The day of our wedding (the whole weekend actually) is one of my favorite memories, filled with love, family, and friends.  It was a gorgeous day that I never wanted to end.  Not to mention, it was the best party we've ever thrown!

5. Do you have any nick-names that you call one another?

Ohhh yes.  Most are not Internet appropriate as we tend to one-up each other with pet names other may consider offensive, but hey...it works for us :)  Aside from all the usuals (babe, honey, sweetie, etc) most commonly I call him Thompson and he calls me by my maiden name (something he never did until after we were married btw).

6. Name 3 things you love most about your honey.

His loyalty.  Tom is among the most loyal and committed people I know.  He will stand by those he loves and will weather any storm with you for as long as you need (i.e. he stuck by Michigan's side when they lost to OSU six years in a row!).  He is the best dad to Gouda dog and I know he will be the most committed, crazy fun dad to our real babies one day.  More than that, he is a really good friend.

His surprises.  Tom and I took much different paths in life until the day we joined forces, so he is constantly surprising me with random stories from his past I couldn't make up if I tried.  He's really, really, funny too.  He makes me laugh allllllllllll the time.

How hard he tries...at everything.  Be it work, being a good friend/son/brother/husband, or just beating Call of Duty; Tom puts thought and effort into everything he does.  I know a lot of guys that half-ass things, but not Tom.  The effort he puts into taking care of his own well-being, me and our relationship, and everyone around him is humbling.

7. Tell us how he proposed?

We moved in together after dating for about ten months.  Looking back that was pretty fast, but it just felt right and has worked out pretty well.  We had a trip to San Francisco planned for April of 2009 so Tom could meet my extended family, and unbeknown to me, Tom had planned to propose to me in San Francisco.  At that point he had already had the ring for about a month and was hiding it in our apartment (right under my nose apparently).  About three weeks before we were scheduled to leave (March 29, 2009) we spent that Sunday doing mundane Sunday errands, but having fun together nonetheless.  We rented a movie (Milk) and after we put it in, Tom sat down but was acting erratic.  He wouldn't press play.  He got up and said he needed to change (he had just put on comfy clothes a minute before) and went into the guest bedroom for a minute.  He came back out, got down on one knee, and proposed.  I was shocked and elated.  He later told me all about his big plan, but said he just couldn't wait anymore.  Another reason I love him and a night I'll never forget.

8. Is he a flowers and teddy bear kind of guy for v-day, or strawberries, champagne, and rose petals?

Um, neither.  But neither am I.  He always brings me flowers, usually my favorite...oriental lilies.  The last few years we've gone out to a nice dinner.

9. Are you a sunset dinner on the beach kind of girl, or pop a movie in and relax on the couch?

Can I say both?  We live in Ohio so we aren't exactly sitting on beachfront property.  If we're near a beach, then no way am I watching tv on the couch.  But for real life, a movie/tv on the couch with Tom is my favorite part of the day.

10. Tell us one thing you'd like to do with your significant one day. If you could do anything? Go anywhere?

Travel more throughout Europe.  Tom is Irish and I'm Italian, so I would love to visit both countries together.  Greece and the surrounding islands are also on my bucket list.  We also daydream about opening a coffee shop together, which I think would be fun someday.

11. Tell us what you plan on doing on this Valentine's Day.
This year we'll probably make dinner together at home.  Dinner on the couch, with Gouda lounging in between us, sounds about perfect to me.  Tom is taking me on a "surprise" date this Saturday afternoon also!

12. Are you asking for anything this Valentine's day?

Nope.  We just bought a new furnace, so our gift to one another is heat.

13. Give us one piece of advice of keeping a relationship strong and full of love.

Well I am certainly no expert, but I think being aware that being together day in and day out is a choice...every single day.  Building a home and family together is wonderful, but it's also hard sometimes.    Some days you're both crabby and just need some space, and I think respecting that and not expecting marriage to be a fairy tale every day is important. Be respectful of one another and the life you created together and live your vows each day.  I try to conduct myself within that parameter and I hope it makes me a better wife because of it. Tom and I can make a trip to the grocery store fun and I hope we can always find the fun in the mundane stuff in life.

14.  Show us a picture of what love means to you.

my new favorite app...

I have said on more than one occasion that having an iPhone is life-changing...aka crack in my hand.  I lurv it.  Its so easy to use, but mainly I'm all about the apps.  I don't think it's too dramatic to say that many apps (even the freebies) make my life easier.  Transfer money and pay bills? Yep.  Track my calories and exercise?  You know it.  Order pictures from Walgreen's? All the time.  Okay I could keep going, but I'll spare you.  This leads me to my new favorite app...Red Stamp!  Upload a picture and make it an awesome personalized card, invitation...for any occasion you can think of.  Here are some cute ones I've made...

Go download it now, then harass your friends with all your new pictures :)

product of the week: olay regenerist serum

I love reading people's reviews of products and I always learn about so much great stuff out there that I never would have otherwise known (thank you blogland!)  I'm linking up with Tiffany to share one of my favorite skin care products...

Luckily I've always had decent skin and I can certainly thank my mom for good genes and teaching me about proper skin care early on.  But as I started pushing the big 3-0 last year, I wanted to be more proactive in slowing down the effects of aging on my face.  Obviously lots of things factor in to the quality of your skin, but I have been loving the extra boost I get from Olay products.

This serum makes my skin feel moisturized but not oily and firm but not tight.  I've tried all kind of brands, cheapies and wallet busters, and so far Olay's Regenerist line is my go to.  And just in case you were wondering (I'm sure you're just dying to know) I also use

I'm a walking ad for Olay eh?  The other thing I like about these products is they all (well maybe except the cleanser) last for several months so I only have to shell out the $ a couple times a year.  I'm thinking ten years from now when I'm drowning myself in vodka on the eve of my 40th birthday, I'll be rather pleased with my 30 year old self.

And as my girl Truvy would say...

"honey ,time marches on and eventually you realize it is marchin' over your face."
